Awareness campaign launched in Porvenir to prevent rural fires

The National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) has reported that it carried out a joint door-to-door operation in Chile’s Magallanes region to promote forest fire prevention measures.

According to CONAF, the campaign was conducted in the rural locality of Boquerón, within the commune of Porvenir on Tierra del Fuego island.

The operation involved CONAF’s prevention assistant for Tierra del Fuego, Fabiola Carrasco, and the Community Integration Office of the 3rd Porvenir Police Station of Carabineros de Chile.

CONAF said the campaign included information on safe use of fire for controlled burns, as well as distribution of emergency contact numbers for both institutions.

Collaboration between forestry and police services

The National Forestry Corporation stated that coordination with the local police formed a key part of the outreach strategy.

It explained that the Community Integration Office of the Carabineros supported the dissemination of materials and helped inform residents about local fire safety protocols.

The agency added that the campaign aimed to strengthen direct communication with residents in remote areas where traditional communication channels may be less effective.

According to CONAF, the presence of police officers helped increase public confidence and engagement during the outreach.

Part of broader forest fire prevention planning

CONAF reported that this activity follows the conclusion of its 2024-2025 plan for forest fire prevention, mitigation, and suppression.

It stated that planning is now underway for the 2025-2026 strategy.

The organization confirmed that these seasonal plans guide its operational, educational, and risk reduction activities throughout Chile.

The agency noted that each plan is adapted based on recent wildfire trends and evolving risk profiles in different regions.

Enhanced local presence in response to wildfire activity

CONAF explained that increased forest fire activity in Tierra del Fuego in recent years has led to a more permanent presence in the province.

It stated that dedicated brigades have been established in both Porvenir and Pampa Guanaco.

The agency added that a district chief and a prevention assistant are now stationed in the area to support year-round coordination and rapid response capacity.

CONAF said that ongoing outreach and community engagement efforts are an integral part of its regional fire prevention approach.
