Forest fire prevention campaign in Quito launched by fire department

July 19, 2024

Joint efforts to protect Quito’s flora and fauna

As reported by Bomberos Quito, the dry season in Quito brings an increased risk of forest fires.

In response, the Quito Fire Department has initiated a campaign called “Together against fire” to engage citizens in protecting the city’s biodiversity.

The campaign emphasizes the joint responsibility of residents to report forest fires or those who cause them by calling 9-1-1.

The campaign highlights the story of Chaupi, a dog who survived the fires of 2023.

Rescued by firefighters on August 2, 2023, Chaupi suffered severe burns but was nursed back to health by the fire department.

Now, Chaupi serves as a mascot for the campaign, promoting awareness and education on preventing forest fires and protecting wildlife in Quito.

Phases of the forest fire prevention campaign

The “Together against fire” campaign consists of two phases: Prevention and Reporting.

The prevention phase focuses on educating the public on how to avoid causing forest fires.

This includes proper disposal of flammable materials and understanding fire hazards.

The goal is to involve every resident and visitor in proactive measures to preserve the forests.

The reporting phase stresses the importance of immediate action when witnessing a forest fire or suspicious activity.

The campaign urges citizens to promptly report any fires or fire-related incidents to emergency services by dialing 9-1-1.

This collaborative effort is crucial for early detection and swift response, minimizing damage to the environment.

Role of citizens in protecting Quito’s biodiversity

Quito is renowned for its biodiversity, notably having the highest number of bird species among cities worldwide.

The fire department’s campaign aims to underscore the shared responsibility of both residents and visitors in safeguarding this natural heritage.

By participating in the “Together against fire” campaign, individuals can contribute significantly to the conservation of Quito’s flora and fauna.

Fire Chief Esteban Cárdenas emphasized the community’s role in forest conservation: “Those who live in or visit Quito are responsible for the care of the flora and fauna of this city.”

The campaign encourages everyone to be vigilant and active in preventing and reporting forest fires, thus playing a vital role in environmental stewardship.
