First Alert’s updated smoke alarms enhance safety with new technology

May 2, 2024

Introduction of new smoke alarm technology nationwide

Resideo Technologies has launched its latest First Alert smoke alarm innovations nationwide as of April 24, 2024.

These alarms incorporate Precision Detection advanced sensing technology and meet new industrywide manufacturing standards set to take effect on June 30.

Updated standards and technological advancements

The new alarms are designed to provide early warnings and reduce nuisance alarms, which are often triggered by everyday occurrences like cooking.

This update aligns with the latest standards from Underwriters Laboratories.

Ryan Park, Safety and Security Product Leader at Resideo, emphasized the importance of these updates: “The benefits of these manufacturing standards are measurable and thoroughly tested to help protect what matters most.”

Enhanced features for modern homes

The First Alert Precision Detection alarms are equipped to handle the unique challenges posed by modern home designs, which often feature higher ceilings and open floor plans.

These conditions can cause fires to burn faster, reducing escape times significantly.

“Today’s home fires burn hotter and faster, and escape times are now shorter, reduced from 10-15 minutes in the 1970s to one to two minutes today,” according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Diverse product line for enhanced safety

The updated First Alert line includes various models, such as a 10-Year Battery Smoke Alarm and a Hardwire Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup.

These products offer features like voice location alerts and interconnection capabilities, which can link multiple alarms across a home.

This ensures that if one alarm sounds, all connected alarms will also activate, alerting all residents no matter where they are in the house.

Impact of reliable smoke alarms on safety

Steve Hirsch, Chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council, stressed the critical role of smoke alarms: “Smoke alarms are the first line of defense to warn the public when a fire breaks out.

It is critical that consumers can trust these devices to be reliable, accurate, and quick.”

He further noted that the advancements in smoke alarm technology could significantly enhance performance and safety.
