This week marks the Firefighter Safety Stand Down, with fire departments across the country encouraged to suspend non-emergency operations to focus on training and education.
This year’s theme, “Fire Training: Back to Basics,” emphasizes the importance of fundamental training principles.
Daily topics throughout the week concentrate on the essential elements of a successful training program, culminating in the 12 Foundations of Fire Department Training.
These foundations are designed to serve as discussion points during crew training sessions or meeting nights.
Numerous resources are available to help fire departments implement the Safety Stand Down and improve their training programs.
One key resource is the 12 Foundations of Fire Department Training poster, which can be downloaded and displayed in fire stations as a constant reminder for all personnel.
Additionally, the Safety Stand Down Quiz tests participants’ knowledge of this year’s theme. Those who take the quiz by June 19 have the opportunity to win a limited-edition challenge coin.
Other resources include activity ideas, presentations on daily themes, and on-demand recordings of a Roundtable Talk and Podcast.
All resources for the Safety Stand Down can be found at www.SafetyStandDown.org. Fire departments are encouraged to submit their Safety Stand Down Success Stories to share how they focus on safety, health, and training, potentially inspiring other departments.
By utilizing these resources, departments can enhance their training initiatives not only during Safety Stand Down week but throughout the year.
