Altamira Terminal Portuaria S.A. de C.V. (ATP), a key port operator at the Port of Altamira in the Gulf of Mexico, has installed Konecranes fire suppression retrofits on nine Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes.
As reported by Konecranes, the retrofit features a non-toxic, non-pressurized aerosol system designed to detect and extinguish critical area fires autonomously.
The system enhances safety for operators by minimizing the risk of fire-related incidents.
Carlos Martinez, Head of Electrical Maintenance at ATP, said: “Although our Konecranes RTGs vary in age, the fire suppression retrofit was easy to install on all of them, and we were even able to take care of some small technical upgrades at the same time.
“Our drivers feel much safer knowing it’s there.”
The Konecranes fire suppression retrofit includes detectors, alarms, and fire-suppressant aerosols.
Each crane is divided into protected areas with control panels to program, test, and manage alarms and extinguishers.
Smoke and heat sensors activate visual and audio alarms, immediately shut down crane functions, and deploy fire-suppressant aerosols.
This retrofit system is fully compatible with Konecranes and non-Konecranes RTGs, allowing flexibility for various crane operators.
ATP handles approximately 500,000 TEUs annually at its container terminal, which connects sea routes to the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe.
By incorporating the retrofit, ATP aims to reduce fire risks and maintain uninterrupted operations at their facilities.
Martinez noted: “We want to be sure that we can quickly control any fire so that our people stay unharmed and any potential damage is minimized.”
The retrofit installation aligns with ATP’s focus on ensuring the safety of its operators and equipment.
The fire suppression retrofit is part of Konecranes’ Any Brand series, offering retrofits for cranes from various manufacturers.
The series includes options to add safety-assist features, electric conversion, and automation upgrades to match the performance of newer crane models.
Rafael Rosales, Operations Manager at Port Services Mexico, said: “By installing the Konecranes fire suppression retrofit, ATP shows their dedication to providing a safe and secure work environment.
“We look forward to bringing them our latest safety technology as it becomes available.”
Altamira Terminal Portuaria (ATP) has retrofitted nine Rubber-Tired Gantry cranes with Konecranes fire suppression systems at the Port of Altamira.
The retrofits, compatible with Konecranes and other brands, autonomously detect and extinguish fires using non-toxic aerosols.
ATP operates a high-volume container terminal connecting to key global routes and aims to improve safety for operators and minimize fire-related risks.
Konecranes’ Any Brand retrofit series offers further options to enhance equipment performance and safety features.
