Home fires pose a significant threat in communities across North America, prompting the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) to launch the Home Fire Sprinkler Week from May 12 to May 18.
The initiative aims to educate the public on the critical role of installed home fire sprinklers in enhancing safety.
Homes are the primary location for civilian fire fatalities, constituting 78 percent of all such deaths.
Modern homes, with their open layouts and the use of lightweight construction materials and technologies like lithium-ion batteries, can become deadly in less than two minutes when a fire breaks out.
The campaign spearheaded by NFPA and HFSC seeks to address this urgent issue by promoting the adoption of home fire sprinklers.
Throughout Home Fire Sprinkler Week, different themes and content will be highlighted daily through social media and website updates.
This strategy is designed to efficiently disseminate key information about the benefits of fire sprinklers, ensuring it reaches a broad audience with minimal effort.
Participants are encouraged to engage with and share the campaign’s daily messages.
Lorraine Carli, NFPA Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy and President of the HFSC, emphasized the challenges in raising awareness: “Educating and increasing awareness about home fire sprinklers can be a challenge,” said Carli.
“What thwarts progress is a lack of public awareness, rampant myths, and the influence of special interests.”
The campaign also introduces HFSC Studio, a new online tool that allows fire departments to create customized educational materials.
These resources are vital for community outreach during Home Fire Sprinkler Week and other fire prevention initiatives.
Fire safety advocates continually point to data showing that fire sprinklers significantly reduce the risk of death, injury, and property damage in home fires.
“That’s why all national building codes require sprinklers in new construction,” Carli stated.
“Every new home built without fire sprinklers is, by definition, substandard.”
The joint effort by NFPA and HFSC to promote Home Fire Sprinkler Week underscores the necessity of community-level interventions to combat the prevalent issue of home fires.
