Fire-Dex’s express route to readiness

January 23, 2025

Jeff Koledo, Vice President of Sales at Fire-Dex, discusses how Express gear programs ensure timely access to essential turnout gear for departments of all sizes

When emergencies arise, the last thing a fire department needs is to be waiting on equipment.

There are times when the delivery of turnout gear ensures new recruits can be outfitted quickly, or that veteran firefighters have the replacement gear they need to continue doing their job effectively and safely.

This level of speed doesn’t just help firefighters—it benefits the entire community.

By improving how quickly departments can prepare, faster gear delivery leads to a safer environment for everyone.

Large and small, fire departments frequently deal with the challenge of getting gear when it’s needed.

PPE can be complicated to produce, and many departments are faced with the prospect of long lead times when they order new bunker gear.

That means there may be older gear still in use that doesn’t provide the safety or features that firefighters need to do their jobs.

Having an option for fast gear delivery can be a game changer, letting departments navigate the purchasing process more smoothly and receive equipment in just a few days.

Quick turnout turnaround

One of the hardest things about getting the right gear is how time-consuming the process can be.

Between needs assessments, budgeting, wear trials, RFPs and vendor selection, ensuring the best use of resources requires patience.

And after all that, it can still take weeks before the equipment is in hand.

Streamlined gear programs provide departments the option to avoid those delays and keep their focus on protecting their communities.

That’s why Fire-Dex developed FXR and FXM Express turnouts, designed to get essential turnout gear to departments in under two weeks.

These programs offer stock options from two of Fire-Dex’s most popular gear lines to ensure that firefighters have quick, reliable access to essential garments.

Offering a blend of safety, comfort and fast availability, the FXR and FXM Express lines are suitable for a variety of department needs and budgets.

For those needing custom features, like specific pocket layouts or specialty elements, Fire-Dex’s custom gear options remain a core offering.

For departments that need gear in a hurry or prefer a preconfigured option, the Express lines are a great fit.

This setup means departments can still go custom for special needs like name plates or patches but use Express gear to keep time and costs down.

Fast access to reliable gear can benefit fire teams in many scenarios including:

  • Contaminated gear after an emergency

In the wake of a hazardous chemical exposure for example, turnout gear may be compromised and unsafe to use.

In an emergency, waiting weeks for replacements simply won’t work.

  • Practical gear for training recruits

Some departments use Express gear to outfit recruits and trainees whose rigorous training routines can be tough on equipment.

This also allows departments to preserve custom sets exclusively for active service.

  • Gear for industrial fire brigades

Departments conducting large-scale training programs or fire academies, as well as industrial fire brigades in industries like petrochemical and manufacturing, also benefit from having bunker gear on hand to meet regulatory standards.

  • Simplified gear rotation

High-volume fire departments that rotate gear on a regular schedule to ensure equipment stays within NFPA compliance can use the Express lines to streamline this process.

FXR express

The FXR Express line is built with a focus on premium materials and fit, giving firefighters the protection they need along with flexibility for challenging tasks.

The turnouts incorporate Active Posture Design™ (APD) developed alongside top rock climbing and extreme sports designers.

APD minimizes stress and fatigue with a slim, comfortable fit, tailored in collaboration with firefighters to maximize their performance.

The outer shell is constructed from TECGEN71®, an exclusive Fire-Dex fabric created specifically for structural firefighting that is designed to reduce heat stress by keeping the gear lightweight and enhancing flexibility.

With a ripstop twill weave, TECGEN71 blends the resilience of DuPont™ Kevlar® and Nomex® with TECGEN’s own fiber, offering robust protection without unnecessary bulk.

FXM Express gear also delivers reliable protection from heat, flames and wear.

Built from an Armor AP™ outer shell, it combines rugged materials with a strong weave that resists abrasions and maintains structural integrity under pressure.

With its balanced design, FXM Express offers high-grade protection without the high price, making it especially practical for departments managing tight budgets but unwilling to compromise on safety.

Rigorous testing for real-world performance

Fire-Dex’s Express lines are built to NFPA 1971 standards, with each material undergoing extensive testing.

Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) measures the gear’s capacity to protect against second-degree burns in extreme heat environments.

The FXR Express turnout gear offers a TPP rating of 37.5, while FXM Express gear provides a TPP rating of 38 to protect firefighters during flashovers and intense heat conditions.

The gear also meets rigorous Total Heat Loss (THL) criteria.

THL measures the fabric’s ability to allow heat and moisture to escape from the inside out, ensuring that firefighters don’t overheat while wearing their gear in strenuous situations.

With a THL rating of 348 for FXR Express and a THL rating of 267 for FXM Express, both gear lines achieve an optimal mix of protection and breathability.

Serving those who serve

Express lines offer a streamlined approach to gear procurement that helps fire departments maintain readiness and meet safety standards without the delays typical of custom orders.

With fast access to essential protective garments, departments can better protect their communities, prepare recruits for active duty, and keep their gear rotations consistent.

In an industry where response time matters most, having the right equipment on hand can make all the difference.
