FEMA is currently accepting applications for its National Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) until March 3.
The YPC program gathers young people from across the United States who are dedicated to enhancing community preparedness.
Eligible applicants include students in grades eight through 11, with selection based on their commitment to public service, community impact, and leadership potential in emergency preparedness.
Members of the YPC serve a one-year term, during which they develop preparedness projects at both the local and national levels.
The council meets virtually to collaborate on initiatives aimed at improving community readiness for emergencies.
Council members also interact with FEMA officials, federal agencies, and national non-profits to gain insights and enhance their leadership skills.
Jiaming Zhang, a 2024-2025 YPC member and project team leader, shared his experience:
“Being a part of YPC has been an enriching experience, but what I’ve enjoyed most is the opportunity to collaborate with [others] who share a commitment to community service and disaster preparedness.
“Engaging with FEMA officials allowed me to gain valuable insights into their expectations, priorities, and suggestions for project planning,” Zhang said.
He emphasized the benefits of working closely with experts, which helped him develop skills in project management and emergency preparedness.
Interested students must submit a completed application form and two letters of recommendation.
Applications, including all supporting materials, must be submitted by March 3.
FEMA plans to announce the new council members by June 2025.
