The FDNY held a ceremony on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island to promote 75 fire officers.

The event celebrated the hard work and dedication of these individuals as they advanced in their careers within the department.

First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer addressed the newly promoted officers, highlighting their dedication: “Today, we celebrate your hard-earned accomplishments, which I know took endless hours of studying and reading.”

Pfeifer also emphasized the importance of family and friends in these achievements: “Our promotions are not ours alone.

They are achieved with the unwavering support and encouragement of our families and our friends to whom we owe a significant debt of gratitude.”

New responsibilities for promoted officers

Acting Chief of Department John Esposito spoke about the new roles and increased responsibilities of the promoted officers.

He acknowledged their past contributions and set expectations for their future duties: “You have done exceptional things in the Department throughout your careers—bravely fighting fires, saving lives and providing outstanding medical care.

“With your promotions, your work and responsibilities will increase, and the Department will ask more of you.”

Esposito stressed the importance of leadership: “The men and women in the field will be looking to you as an example of what to do and what not to do.”

The promoted officers, with their combined experience of over 1,000 years, will be vital in their new positions across various fire companies in New York City.

Breakdown of promotions

The ceremony included the promotion of 15 battalion chiefs to deputy chief, 24 fire lieutenants to captain, and 33 firefighters to lieutenant.

Additionally, one firefighter was promoted to marine pilot, and two firefighters became marine wipers.

These promotions reflect the department’s commitment to recognizing and advancing its members based on their skills, experience, and dedication.

Each promoted officer brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their new roles, ensuring the continued excellence and safety of the department’s operations.

They will be distributed among fire companies throughout New York City, ready to take on their enhanced responsibilities.
