The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) has officially launched a new training program, “Control the Bleed,” in an effort to provide bystanders with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively when faced with life-threatening bleeding.
The announcement was made Tuesday 18 November 2025, at the NYCHA Van Dyke Community Center in Brooklyn.
The new public education and training initiative will be implemented through the Department’s CPR Unit.
FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker explained: “‘Control the Bleed’ is a training program that is meant to offer regular New Yorkers the skills to help them help their neighbors in an emergency.
“By teaching lifesaving skills, we’re ensuring that everyday citizens can respond with confidence when faced with life-threatening bleeding.
“This is critical and it reflects our mission of protecting lives by equipping communities with tools to act before help arrives.”
The inaugural training was held in partnership with Brownsville In Violence Out (BIVO), which is an anti-gun violence initiative serving the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Control the Bleed is possible thanks to support from the FDNY Foundation and a Department of Homeland Security grant support.
