Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker announced a series of appointments within the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), marking key leadership changes in the department.
Mark Guerra has been appointed as the First Deputy Commissioner, the highest-ranking civilian position after the Commissioner.
John M. Esposito has been named the Chief of Department, leading the uniformed staff.
Additionally, Kevin F. Woods has taken on the role of Chief of Fire Operations.
The announcement also includes the promotions of Chiefs John Sarrocco and Malcolm Moore to Assistant Chiefs.
Commissioner Tucker commended the newly appointed leaders, saying: “Today, I’m beyond honored to make each of you a part of my team—publicly and officially.”
Mark Guerra, a 36-year FDNY veteran, steps into the role of First Deputy Commissioner, where he will manage daily operations across the FDNY’s offices and bureaus.
Guerra joined the FDNY in 1988 and has served in various roles, including Battalion Chief and Executive Officer to the FDNY Commissioner.
Guerra expressed his commitment to the department, stating: “I am deeply committed to serving New Yorkers and to the mission of this Department, as I have been for 36 years.”
Guerra holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Law and has been recognized for bravery multiple times during his career.
John M. Esposito, now appointed as the Chief of Department, brings 34 years of experience, having served in various operational capacities, including his recent role as Chief of Operations.
Esposito’s responsibilities will encompass overseeing the FDNY’s 14,000 uniformed personnel and its core operational units, including Fire Operations, EMS Operations, and Fire Prevention.
Reflecting on his career and new role, Esposito said: “It is the honor of a lifetime to be the Chief of Department of the world’s greatest fire department.” He has served across different boroughs and units, including the Special Operations Command.
The FDNY also promoted Kevin F. Woods to Chief of Fire Operations.
Woods, a 34-year veteran, has been with the department since 1990 and has held various positions, including Deputy Assistant Chief and Assistant Chief of Operations.
He will now manage the department’s firefighting personnel and work closely with city planning and borough commanders.
John Sarrocco and Malcolm Moore have also been promoted to Assistant Chiefs.
Sarrocco, a 35-year FDNY veteran, has previously served as Bronx Borough Commander.
Moore, with 29 years in the department, is currently leading the Special Operations Command, managing specialized units such as Marine and Hazardous Materials Operations.
