FBI agents have shared new information about the incendiary devices used to ignite fires in ballot drop boxes during the 2024 election in the Pacific Northwest.
According to AP News, the devices were made using thermite—a mixture of metal shavings and iron oxide—and enclosed in welded scrap metal.
Thermite burns at temperatures up to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,204 Celsius).
Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson, speaking at a news conference in Portland, Oregon, explained the construction of the devices and highlighted their volatility.
The suspect behind the attacks remains unidentified, with authorities still searching for leads.
Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington stated: “We’re very worried that this person may harm himself or others if he continues to experiment with thermite.”
Two ballot drop boxes were set ablaze on October 28, 2024, in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.
The Portland fire resulted in minimal damage thanks to a functioning fire suppression system, with only three ballots affected.
In Vancouver, however, the suppression system failed, leading to damage to nearly 500 ballots.
The Clark County auditor’s office confirmed that election staff identified the damaged ballots.
Both incidents occurred shortly before Election Day, with Vancouver playing a key role in a competitive U.S. House race.
A prior fire on October 8 in Vancouver did not damage ballots but involved a similar device.
The FBI has asked the public to help identify individuals with unexplained storage of metal shavings, an interest in thermite, or recent disposal of a vehicle matching the suspect’s description.
The agency is particularly focused on a dark-colored 2003 or 2004 Volvo S-60 sedan seen near the fires.
This car, captured in surveillance footage, had a fraudulent Washington temporary license plate, a light interior, worn trim, and aftermarket rims.
Agents noted the suspect might have sold, repaired, or discarded the vehicle.
The devices included handwritten messages such as “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” raising questions about the intent behind the attacks.
Authorities are investigating whether the messages reflect genuine beliefs or an attempt to mislead investigators.
The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspect.
Individuals with relevant details, including recent burn damage to properties or signs of thermite experimentation, are urged to contact law enforcement.
The FBI has released information on thermite devices used to target ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, before the 2024 election.
The devices, made from thermite and enclosed in welded scrap metal, caused damage to hundreds of ballots.
Authorities are still searching for the suspect, believed to be a man with welding or metalworking experience, and have identified a vehicle of interest: a 2003–2004 Volvo S-60 sedan with specific modifications.
The FBI has offered a $25,000 reward for information and is urging the public to report any suspicious activity related to thermite, welding, or unexplained burn damage.
Investigators are also examining the potential motives behind messages found on the devices.
