Eriks Gabliks has assumed the role of Acting Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator following the retirement of Tonya Hoover, as reported by Firehouse.
Gabliks, who will continue in his current position as Superintendent of the National Fire Academy, stated: “This is only temporary. I have no interest in the job.”
Gabliks praised Hoover’s dedication to the fire service, noting her continued passion.
Hoover, who started her career in Shippensburg, PA, has retired to spend more time with her family.

She explained her decision: “I’m at a point in my life I want to spend time with my family—that’s it. I have no plans.”
Hoover shared that she is looking forward to being more present for her family, recalling a recent trip where she was recognized as a mom rather than a fire service professional.
During her tenure, Hoover managed the day-to-day operations of the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), including the training of over 100,000 first responders annually.
She also oversaw fire prevention, public information, and public education programs.
Before becoming Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator, Hoover served as Superintendent of the National Fire Academy from May 2017 to January 2020, enhancing the capabilities of fire and emergency services professionals.
From July 2009 to July 2016, she was the California State Fire Marshal, where she oversaw statewide fire prevention, training, and safety programs.
Hoover’s career includes roles as a fire marshal/battalion chief for a local fire department and as a deputy campus fire marshal at the University of California, Berkeley.
Her extensive experience in the fire service spans over 20 years in local and state government management.
Tonya Hoover holds an MBA in Business and Human Resources from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Science in Technical Education from Oklahoma State University.
She also has an associate degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology from Oklahoma State University and a California lifetime teaching credential for fire science.
Hoover remains engaged with professional organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association and the International Fire Service Training Association.
She continues to be involved with the International Code Council.

Hoover’s educational background includes an MBA and a Bachelor of Science in Technical Education.
She remains active in several professional fire service organizations.
