Munich-headquartered OroraTech uses thermal imaging satellites to monitor wildfires. Its system combines space hardware with a digital platform designed to provide earlier alerts and support decision-making for emergency services, infrastructure operators and public agencies.
Its approach combines multiple data sources into a single service designed to make fire-related information easier to access and apply. Each satellite is roughly the size of a shoe box and weighs around ten kilograms. The spacecraft are built specifically for wildfire monitoring and are intended to operate as a constellation for frequent revisits.
OroraTech’s satellites process data directly in orbit. Onboard computing identifies thermal hotspots and sends coordinates and related attributes to ground within minutes.
The aim is to reduce the time between detection and notification. It also ingests data from public satellite programmes to increase coverage and fill timing gaps, then harmonises outputs into a consistent information layer for users who prefer not to manage raw imagery.
The Wildfire Solution platform integrates satellite detections with other sources. Users can upload a defined area, such as a region or asset footprint, and receive alerts when activity is detected. Notifications are delivered by email, push alert or messaging applications.
The platform includes predictive modelling, including a Fire Spread tool that projects likely development over the next six to twelve hours and updates as new information arrives.
A fire break feature allows users to simulate containment measures and assess potential impact before or during an incident. Outputs are presented in an interface intended to support planning, operations and after-action review.
Following an incident, the Burnt Area tool provides mapped assessments of damage and land affected. These layers are designed to help with recovery work and feed back into future modelling by identifying areas that have already burned.
OroraTech notes that maintaining this record over multiple seasons supports trend analysis, risk assessment and operational planning for agencies and asset owners.
Its clients include forestry firms, insurers, governments and emergency services, ranging from local jurisdictions to national-level programmes. OroraTech is now expanding its presence in the United States.
