The National Directorate of Firefighters Colombia (DNBC) through the National Program of Indigenous Firefighters has certified 20 new units of the Los Pastos group, Resguardo de Muellamués, in the municipality of Guachucal (Nariño).
During her visit to the southwest of the country, Captain in Chief Lina María Marín Rodríguez made an announcement, saying: “We are building a special route to certify all processes of the indigenous brigades of Colombia.
“We are also with the Afros, Rrom and Raizales, where we have to make the inclusion of these communities special to us.”
During the graduation ceremony of the ‘Basic Firefighter Training’ Course, led by the Riosucio Volunteer Fire Department (Caldas), the General Director of the DNBC stressed that the intention of the National Government and the Ministry of the Interior is to dignify life and protect the ecosystems of our ancestral territories.
Meanwhile, the precursor of the Indigenous Firefighters Program of Colombia, Captain Óscar Mejía Muñoz, said: “For me it is satisfying to be building a country in the territories. We are showing the world and Colombia that firefighting is not only in the capital cities and municipal capitals.”
For his part, the Commander of the Guachucal Volunteer Fire Department, Firefighter Luis Polibio Quenan, stressed that Nariño is a volunteer territory.
He added: “There is a very beautiful fauna and nature; and we have committed ourselves to take care of it and to continue with the task to which we have always been dedicated.”
The beneficiaries of the program spoke of their gratitude and admiration for the training and practical training process they received, which adds to the ancestral traditions they have learned from their elders.
