Detroit Smoke Alarm Program installs free alarms citywide

The Detroit Fire Department has launched the Detroit Smoke Alarm Program (DSAP), aiming to install more than 5,000 smoke alarms in homes citywide.

As reported by the Detroit Fire Department, this initiative is designed to enhance fire safety across the city.

Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms announced the program, which prioritizes 10-year battery smoke alarms to provide long-term protection without the need for frequent battery changes.

Detroit residents can apply for this free service, with the department planning to reach 1,300 to 2,000 homes over the next year.

10-year battery smoke alarms: durable and reliable

The DSAP focuses on installing smoke alarms powered by sealed lithium batteries lasting 10 years.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, homes with working smoke alarms halve the risk of fatal fire incidents.

The alarms installed through this program will give an end-of-life warning when replacement is needed.

Residents will also benefit from added features, such as eliminating low-battery chirps and avoiding regular battery changes.

Accessibility options for residents with hearing impairments

The program addresses accessibility by offering specialized smoke alarms for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing.

These alarms feature strobe lights and can integrate with pillow or bed shakers that activate during an alarm.

Residents requesting such devices are encouraged to communicate their needs when applying for the program.

The Detroit Fire Department recommends choosing alarms and accessories listed by a qualified testing laboratory for reliability.

Building a fire safety plan alongside smoke alarms

Along with installing alarms, Detroit Fire Department teams help residents establish comprehensive fire safety plans.

As fire can spread rapidly, knowing how to respond is critical.

The department advises families to inspect exits, develop escape routes, and practice fire drills.

During DSAP installations, team members will ensure residents are familiar with fire escape strategies, emphasizing the importance of preparation.
