As reported by the Clayton Fire Department, Chad Stephenson has been appointed as the new Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.
He officially took on his role on September 23.
The selection process was competitive, drawing 25 candidates from across the country, ultimately identifying Stephenson as the best choice for the position.
Stephenson has over 16 years of experience in the fire service.
He began his career at the Thanksgiving Fire Department, where he advanced to the position of Assistant Fire Chief.
He was involved in the merger of the Archers Lodge and Thanksgiving Fire Departments, which now operate as Northside Fire/Rescue.
Currently, he serves as the B-shift Battalion Chief at Northside while also holding a position as a Fire Captain with the Cary Fire Department since 2010.
Clayton Fire Chief David Ranes expressed confidence in Stephenson’s capabilities, stating: “Chad’s extensive operational experience, coupled with his local knowledge and leadership abilities, make him a perfect fit for the Clayton Fire Department.”
Ranes emphasized that Stephenson’s ability to manage fireground operations while focusing on team development and safety is crucial for the department’s ongoing service to the community.
Stephenson’s academic background includes an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection from Fayetteville Technical Community College.
He also possesses various certifications, such as Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Officer I & II, and Fire Instructor III.
His diverse expertise covers fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue.
Upon his appointment, Stephenson remarked: “I am deeply honored to join the Clayton Fire Department.
“This is a community with a strong sense of identity, and I look forward to working alongside a dedicated team to ensure the safety and well-being of Clayton’s residents.”

Chief Ranes highlighted Stephenson’s strengths during the selection process, noting his fireground knowledge, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills.
Ranes stated, “We are confident that his leadership will bring great value to our department and the Clayton community.”
