CHEMTREC launch 2025 HELP Award for first responders

CHEMTREC, a provider of emergency hazmat communication and support, is continuing its commitment to first responders with the launch of the 2025 HELP (Hazmat Emergencies Local Preparedness) Award, an announcement that has been shared by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

In partnership with the American Chemistry Council, Dow and LyondellBasell, CHEMTREC will award six US fire departments $10,000 each to elevate their hazardous materials response capabilities and community preparedness.

Impact of the HELP Award

For over 50 years, CHEMTREC has been deeply rooted in the responder community; with 24/7 support during hazmat emergencies, they’ve built relationships that power their mission. The HELP Award is an extension of that commitment—an investment in the departments that stand on the front lines of chemical safety.

Companies behind the 2025 HELP Award

  • CHEMTREC – Three awards nationwide.
  • American Chemistry Council – One award nationwide.
  • Dow – One award for departments located in CA, IL, KY, MI, NJ, OH, PA, TN, or TX.
  • LyondellBasell – One award for departments located in IL, IA, LA, or TX.

Eligibility

To apply, departments must be a local or state volunteer, career or combination fire department in the US.

They must be legally organized under state law or recognized by the BIA for tribal entities and submit an essay describing specific training, equipment and resources needed for hazmat response.

The departments must also demonstrate local risks and preparedness plans for potential hazardous materials incidents.

The IAFC has highlighted how only one application per department will be considered. Previous awardees must wait five years before reapplying.

Deadline and application details

Applications are open now through September 5, 2025. Selected departments must use the award funds solely for hazmat preparedness and they’ll welcome CHEMTREC representatives for a celebratory department visit within six months of notification.

Award recipients agree to share application details and photos to help amplify the importance of this initiative through CHEMTREC, TRANSCAER and the American Chemistry Council’s outreach efforts.
