CFKF present a million dollars to Vancouver Firefighters Charities

The Canucks For Kids Fund (CFKF) presented a $1 million check to the Vancouver Firefighters Charities (VFC) during the Vancouver Canuck’s Firefighters Night 23 January.

This was an announcement shared by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), who shared that the donation was the largest single contribution the VFC has ever received.

The funding will benefit the many kids’ programs funded by Vancouver, BC Local 18’s charity, including Snacks for Kids, Sports for Kids and Toys for Kids.

Local 18 President Katrina Davison, who was on hand to receive the check, explained: “This incredible generosity will have a lasting impact on children and families across our city. This is what community partnership looks like.

“Vancouver firefighters proudly donate their time, energy and passion, supporting our community every single day.

“Through programs like Snacks for Kids, VFC helps provide food security to Vancouver’s most vulnerable children – because no child should have to learn on an empty stomach.”

Snacks for Kids currently provides daily nutritional support to 11,000 food insecure youth across 102 schools and after-school programs.

President, Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Business Operations, Michael Doyle’s statement

Michael Doyle, President, Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Business Operations commented: “Firefighters play a vital role in keeping our communities safe, often putting others first without hesitation.

“This donation reflects our deep appreciation for their service and supports the important work of Vancouver Firefighter Charities in strengthening our community.

“We are proud to help firefighters make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

The relationship between the National Hockey League team and Vancouver Firefighter Charities began in part due to former Canuck Quinn Hughes.

Hughes was inspired to do something for the community’s firefighters by his grandfather, Marty Hughes. Marty served 30 years as a firefighter with the FDNY and was one of the 9/11 responders.

At first, Hughes donated tickets to British Columbia firefighters for every home game.

Three years ago, the Canucks expanded that recognition into an official Fire Fighters Night, held when Vancouver hosts the New Jersey Devils – where Hughes’ two brothers play.

The night has continued even though Quinn Hughes was traded to Minnesota last year.

Now, Vancouver Firefighter Charities and the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund work closely with the Canucks organization to help make this night special for all firefighters in attendance.

Executive Director, Vancouver Firefighters, Eric Himmelman’s statement

Vancouver Firefighters Executive Director Eric Himmelman, a Local 18 member, dedicates his off time to assist with the VFC and was there for the check presentation.

Himmelman explained: “Vancouver Firefighter Charities is sincerely grateful to the Canucks organization and the Canucks For Kids fund for believing in our mission and supporting our programs with this significant donation.

“Supporting the health and well-being of at-risk children in our community is our collective responsibility and with this donation, the VFC will be able to deliver even more targeted and meaningful impact to children in our community who need support the most.”
