The Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation (CFCF) has officially launched as a national charitable organization focused on occupational cancer awareness, firefighter health, and support for firefighters and families affected by cancer across Canada.
Founded by Bradley R Davidson, the charity says it was created in response to the growing impact of cancer within the Canadian fire service and the need for a dedicated national organization to provide support, education, prevention resources, and advocacy.
“Far too many firefighters and their families have experienced the devastating effects of occupational cancer,” Davidson said. “The Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation was established to ensure that no firefighter faces this journey alone and to bring national attention to one of the leading health threats facing our fire service.”
Davidson, who has lost several firefighter peers and colleagues to cancer, said those experiences helped prompt the creation of the CFCF. The foundation said firefighters regularly work in hazardous environments where they may be exposed to known and suspected carcinogens, making coordinated education, prevention, and support increasingly important.
The CFCF’s stated mission includes supporting firefighters and their families after a cancer diagnosis, promoting cancer prevention and awareness initiatives, funding firefighter health programs, and advocating for stronger occupational cancer recognition and protections.
The organization also plans to build partnerships with fire services, firefighter associations, researchers, healthcare professionals, corporate sponsors, donors, and community groups, while creating national awareness campaigns focused on firefighter health and wellness.
The foundation said it will work collaboratively with departments, associations, health organizations, researchers, and community leaders to strengthen support systems and improve outcomes for firefighters nationwide.
“We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the men and women who protect our communities every day,” Davidson added. “Through education, advocacy, and support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of firefighters and their families.”
As part of its launch, the CFCF is inviting fire departments, firefighter organizations, healthcare professionals, researchers, corporate sponsors, donors, and community members to support its work to improve firefighter health and cancer awareness across Canada.
