The Cedar Park Police and Fire Departments will soon benefit from a newly approved, multi-million dollar training facility.
As reported by KXAN, the $30 million project, funded by a 2022 voter-approved bond, will serve as a dedicated training center for both departments.
The new facility is a significant upgrade from current arrangements.
Fire Chief James Mallinger explained: “What we’re using right now is a house as a classroom. The living room is our classroom.”
He expressed optimism about the forthcoming change, which will be located adjacent to the current fire training tower in Cedar Park.
The facility is designed to include three main sections: a 17,000-square-foot training space, a dedicated emergency operations center, and an apparatus bay for housing fire and emergency vehicles.
According to Mallinger, the city and fire department’s focus on growth will help the department better meet emergency call demands and prioritize staff training needs.
This collaborative approach will also benefit the Cedar Park Police Department, which plans to use the facility for its own training programs.
City officials, including Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin, emphasized the benefits of a shared training space.
Penniman-Morin stated: “This facility will foster a collaborative environment where first responders from multiple agencies can train together.
“It will enhance their preparedness and coordinate their response capabilities to protect our community and the surrounding area of Cedar Park.”
Cedar Park’s growth and increasing emergency response needs influenced the decision to invest in a facility that can accommodate multiple agencies and improve inter-departmental coordination.
Future expansion is a possibility for the new Cedar Park training facility.
According to Mallinger, there is potential for a third phase to accommodate additional needs as the city’s population and demand for emergency services continue to increase.
“There is a possible phase three of the project down the road that would allow for some expansion, but we’re just excited to be moving forward on this great new facility,” Mallinger said.
The bond that funded the facility also includes allocations for other local projects: $86 million for transportation and $42 million for parks and recreation.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin later this fall, with an expected opening in the spring of 2026.
