The Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG) has spotlighted the Yellow September campaign, where the whole month is dedicated to suicide prevention.
Yellow September is marked by the motto “seeking help is an act of courage”, with the initiative aiming to reduce the taboo surrounding the topic and encourage people to seek support and treatment.
The CBMMG also reinstated its support for the cause, acknowledging how suicide is a serious global public health issue.
The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that more than 700,000 people die by suicide annually worldwide.
According to the CBMMG, suicide prevention is particularly important for public safety personnel, with professional like firefighters being constantly exposed to high-stress situations and trauma which can impact their mental health.
On the 11th of September, the corporation will host the “Yellow September” Livestream on its YouTube channel , featuring Colonel Diógenes Martins Munhoz of the São Paulo State Fire Department.
The CBMMG has reiterated that whilst September is a chance to highlight work around suicide prevention, it is a responsibility they hold 365 days a year.
To reinforce this prevention and response capacity, the Military Firefighter Academy trains students in Suicide Attempt Management through training and qualification courses (CATS).
Also regarding the adoption of new practices to promote mental health, training of CBMMG instructors in mindfulness meditation is underway, to disseminate a strategy for reducing stress, improving mental health and improving quality of life among the troops.
In ongoing care for the troops, “White January” has also been an important campaign developed through live broadcasts, focusing on preventing mental health issues among military firefighters.
To further strengthen the management of this risk, CBMMG has released a booklet that provides information and tips for suicide prevention, encouraging vulnerable individuals to seek help and treatment.
The CBMMG also highlighted the Center for the Appreciation of Life (CVV), a free, voluntary emotional support and suicide prevention service.
CVV offers 24-hour, confidential and anonymous support via telephone, chat, email and in person. It’s a valuable resource for anyone who needs to talk and find support in times of crisis.
