On the morning of 2 March 2025, the Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais (CBMMG) in Brazil, held a meeting at the headquarters of the 7th Military Fire Battalion (7th BBM), in Montes Claros, to deal with traffic accidents in the city and on the main highways in the region.
In addition to CBMMG, the meeting was attended by the Federal Highway Police, the Civil Police, Mctrans, Samu Macronorte and the concessionaire Ecovias Norte Minas.
Brazil ranks third in the world in traffic deaths, behind only India and China. In 2023, according to Detran-MG, there was a 7% increase in the number of traffic accidents.
According to data from the State Health Department (SES), in the same year, more than 22 thousand people were hospitalized due to road accidents, generating a cost of R$ 39 million with medicines and treatments performed in public hospitals, excluding care in the private network.
Faced with this scenario, the participating agencies discussed the planning of actions to prevent traffic accidents, with a focus on reducing fatalities and serious injuries.
Based on the identification of the “hot zones”, that is, the urban and road points with the highest incidence of serious accidents, specific measures will be proposed to curb infractions and prevent new occurrences.
In the short term, the presence of security and traffic agents will be intensified on the days, places and times of highest incidence of accidents.
At the same time, medium and long-term strategies will be studied, the implementation of which will depend on technical and scientific studies carried out jointly by the competent bodies. After this phase of analysis, the measures will be put into practice.
All these initiatives are in line with the commitment signed by the State of Minas Gerais with the National Traffic Secretariat, aiming at the engagement of traffic, health and safety agencies in the execution of the established guidelines.
This effort involves the State Health Department, the Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais, the Military Police of Minas Gerais, the Federal Highway Police and SAMU.
