New class of firefighters complete CAL FIRE academy

The Press Office of Governor Gavin Newsom has reported that new graduates from multiple California state agencies have completed their training and begun service, including firefighters, correctional officers, and highway patrol officers.

According to the governor’s office, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has added 38 new Company Officer Academy graduates to its ranks.

The graduates completed six weeks of training covering emergency management, fire vehicle operation, wildland and structural command, investigation, and fitness.

CAL FIRE Chief and Director Joe Tyler said: “Graduations are a time to come together with family, friends, and coworkers to celebrate the hard work our Company Officers have put in over the past six weeks.

“These women and men represent the next generation of leadership at CAL FIRE.

“I am very proud of their accomplishment and wish them the best as they return home to their new roles.”

The department stated that 272 individuals have graduated from the Company Officer Academy in 2025 to date.

It also confirmed that 42 others have completed the Emergency Command Center Academy this year.

CDCR cadets graduate and join California correctional institutions

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) announced that 168 cadets graduated from the Basic Correctional Officer Academy following 13 weeks of training.

These graduates will join CDCR institutions across California as correctional officers.

According to CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber: “It takes a special kind of person to wear the badge, the sacrifices and dedication of our families cannot be overstated.

“Our future success is dependent upon your professionalism, respect, and commitment to excellence.”

The CDCR stated that there are 601 total correctional officer graduates in 2025 so far.

It confirmed that the department now employs nearly 21,500 correctional officers at 31 adult institutions across the state.

Highway patrol academy adds 133 new officers

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that 133 new officers have graduated from its West Sacramento training academy after 26 weeks of instruction.

The officers will now begin their assignments at one of the department’s 102 Area offices located across California.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said: “This graduation marks the beginning of a commitment to protecting and serving others.

“These officers have demonstrated their dedication to keeping California’s communities safe and upholding the CHP’s core values.”

According to the department, the academy trains cadets in traffic enforcement, community policing, emergency vehicle operations, and ethics, among other areas.

The CHP stated that 364 officers have been sworn in this year and that 160 new cadets will start training on June 9.

The agency currently employs about 7,000 officers statewide.

Public safety staffing efforts continue across California

The governor’s office explained that these new graduates will reinforce public safety capacity in communities across California.

It also emphasized the state’s continuing efforts to attract new applicants for essential services.
