A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during New York City’s July Fourth fireworks show, sending flames and smoke into the air before firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The New York City Fire Department said two fire engines were used to put out the fire, which was reported shortly before 10 p.m. while the bridge was closed to traffic for the fireworks display. No injuries were reported.
Video from the scene showed firefighters dousing flames on the Brooklyn Bridge as smoke rose above the East River. Officials said fires connected to large fireworks events are among the risks crews prepare for, with public viewing areas kept at a safe distance.
The fireworks show had been moved earlier because of severe weather concerns affecting celebrations across the East Coast. In Washington, D.C., storms prompted officials to evacuate crowds from the National Mall during July Fourth events.
