DG Diário de Goiás has reported that a permanent firefighting presence was launched on May 24 in conservation areas across Goiás, Brazil, to prevent and respond to forest fires.
The operation is being led by the Goiás Military Fire Department (CBMGO), in coordination with the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainable Development (SEMAD).
The first base was established in the Altamiro de Moura Pacheco State Park.
According to CBMGO, four military firefighters trained in forest fire response will remain stationed at the site until November 3.
The team is equipped with 4×4 vehicles, 200-liter water kits, blowers and personal protective equipment.
Their work will include both fire suppression and preventative activities.
CBMGO stated that the base in Altamiro de Moura Pacheco State Park is the first of up to seven that will be set up in other Conservation Units over the next few months.
Each will be staffed by permanent teams throughout the dry season.
The department added that these efforts form part of a wider prevention and rapid response strategy.
The approach is tailored to the region’s biomes and aims to address the heightened risks during the annual dry period.
Coordination will involve CBMGO, SEMAD and other local environmental bodies.
In addition to responding to active fires, the firefighters will carry out prescribed burns and construct firebreaks.
CBMGO explained that they will also inspect high-risk zones and visit neighboring properties.
Officers will deliver public guidance to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled outbreaks.
The department emphasized the importance of early intervention to stop small fires from escalating.
Lieutenant Colonel Altieri, commander of Operation Cerrado Vivo 2025, said: “Our commitment is to ensure the protection of our conservation units with planning, presence and rapid action.”
” This preventive work is essential to prevent small outbreaks from becoming major environmental tragedies.”
The State Secretariat stated that the operation reflects Goiás’ ongoing efforts to safeguard biodiversity and adapt to environmental risks.
The operation aims to protect ecosystems and communities located near protected lands.
