Zilor and Ascana launch 2025 campaign to reduce fire risk

Zilor Energia e Alimentos has launched the 2025 edition of its fire prevention campaign in partnership with Ascana, the Association of Sugar Cane Planters of Médio Tietê.

As reported by Jornal Cana, the “Together Against Fire – Prevention is Protection” initiative was announced on May 23 at Ascana’s headquarters in Brazil and will run through October.

The campaign focuses on fire prevention and response across sugarcane fields, preservation zones and riparian forests during the dry season.

Cláudio Campanholi, Agricultural Partnerships Manager at Zilor, said: “To face the dry season, it is essential to act on three fronts: promote awareness to prevent fire outbreaks, maintain trained and agile brigades, and count on the support of the community, which can call Zilor’s 0800 number in case of smoke.

“Prevention is the most effective way to reduce the damage caused by fire.”

Community involvement and environmental messaging highlighted

The campaign will include outreach activities aimed at schools, residents, local authorities and employees across several municipalities.

Pedro Luís Lorenzetti, President of Ascana, said: “Since 2017, sugarcane has been harvested raw in our region, because we believe that preserving the environment is part of our commitment.

“We have trained teams, technology and structure, but success in fighting fires depends on the attitude of each person.

“Prevention begins with everyone’s awareness.”

The campaign emphasizes the importance of protecting biodiversity, particularly fauna and flora in areas where sugarcane is cultivated.

Surveillance and rapid response systems in place

According to Jornal Cana, Zilor and Ascana have implemented a network of five long-range cameras, satellite monitoring and real-time communication channels for fire detection and response.

The companies’ response system covers approximately 130,000 hectares.

Their joint firefighting structure includes 54 water trucks and trained teams from affiliated agricultural companies.

Employees use WhatsApp groups to coordinate containment actions when incidents occur.

Fire safety education and reporting channels open

Activities planned for the 2025 campaign include employee training, community events, public guidance sessions, and a regional advertising campaign.

Educational initiatives involve a cultural competition for 5th-year students from schools in Lençóis Paulista, Macatuba, Pederneiras, Quatá and Lucélia.

Two toll-free phone lines are available for the public to report fire-related incidents year-round:

0800 700 1930 for Lençóis Paulista and Macatuba
0800 700 1933 for Quatá and Lucélia

Representatives from local government, fire services and the Environmental Police attended the campaign’s launch event.
