Smith Myers launches ARTEMIS AI to support aerial firefighting and mission-critical operations

Smith Myers has introduced ARTEMIS AI, a secure, onboard artificial intelligence capability designed to help crews make faster decisions during complex missions, including aerial firefighting, search and rescue, and disaster response operations.

Announced at Farnborough International Airshow, the new capability extends the company’s ARTEMIS mobile phone detection and location system with embedded intelligence intended for use at the operational edge. Smith Myers said the system is designed for environments where crews may be operating with limited connectivity, high workload, and rapidly changing mission priorities.

Unlike AI tools that depend on cloud connectivity, ARTEMIS AI operates within a closed onboard system using a large language model that requires no internet, cloud, or third-party connection. According to Smith Myers, that approach is intended to maintain data sovereignty, operational security, and reliability in disconnected or contested environments.

For aerial firefighting operators, the technology could support crews by helping plan missions, optimize system settings, monitor equipment health, and provide real-time decision support while aircraft are deployed over active incidents. The company said operators will be able to use natural language commands to configure complex missions, with the system adjusting parameters based on mission requirements, historical performance, and environmental conditions.

During live operations, ARTEMIS AI is designed to identify anomalies, highlight potential threats or opportunities, recommend actions, and guard against ineffective decisions. It can also monitor hardware and software performance, address certain faults automatically, and provide troubleshooting guidance when crew intervention is needed.

Smith Myers said the post-mission tools will automatically generate reports, charts, briefings, and after-action reviews, giving organizations a clearer record of what happened during an incident and helping inform future operational improvements.

“ARTEMIS AI represents the next evolution of operational capability,” said Andrew Munro, managing director of Smith Myers. “By embedding intelligent decision support directly into the ARTEMIS platform, we are enabling operators to achieve more with less effort, while maintaining complete control of the system at all times.”
