January 27, 2025

Apply by Jan. 31 for IAFF’s 2025 political and communications training academies

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Communications Training Academy (CTA) and A. Michael Mullane Political Training Academy (PTA).

According to the IAFF, these weeklong, hands-on programs aim to provide members with practical tools to enhance their Local’s communication and political strategies.

The Communications Training Academy focuses on public relations, social media, and political action, enabling members to effectively convey their Local’s message to fellow members and the broader public.

The Political Training Academy is designed to strengthen members’ political acumen, guiding them in decision-making processes critical to election campaigns and legislative efforts.

Attendance at the PTA is limited to U.S.-based IAFF members.

Event details and eligibility requirements

Both academies will take place from May 5-9, 2025, at the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.

Eligibility is restricted to active IAFF members, with each Local encouraged to recommend only one candidate per program.

Applications must include a letter of recommendation from the Local president.

Local presidents wishing to apply are required to obtain a recommendation letter from their District Vice President (DVP).

The IAFF will cover lodging and meal expenses, while participants are responsible for their own travel costs.

Application process and deadlines

Each program is limited to 50 participants due to the interactive and intensive nature of the training.

Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of February.

For the CTA, inquiries can be directed to communications@iaff.org. Questions regarding the PTA should be sent to politics@iaff.org.

Testimonials from 2024 attendees

Past participants have highlighted the programs’ value.

One attendee of the 2024 Communications Training Academy noted: “I’ve been to numerous IAFF trainings… but this class was probably the most intense and the one I learned the most in.”

A 2024 PTA participant shared: “Your instruction at PTA helped me tailor my message and priorities and proceed with confidence as I worked through the legislative process in my home state.”
