Thousands evacuated as wildfires continue to burn, American Red Cross provides support

The American Red Cross is assisting thousands of Californians affected by wildfires that have burned for over a week.

As reported by the organization, over 400 workers are on the ground providing shelter, food, emotional support, recovery planning and financial assistance to those displaced.

Tens of thousands remain under mandatory evacuation orders as fire weather conditions remain hazardous.

Residents are being urged to heed evacuation orders from local authorities and await clearance before returning to their homes.

Shelters provide safety and resources

More than 750 evacuees are currently sheltered in Red Cross facilities, the organization said.

These shelters are open to everyone and do not require identification or proof of residency.

They provide meals, information, phone charging stations and support services.

Shelter locations can be found on the Red Cross website, the Emergency app, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Volunteers are also addressing minor injuries, replacing lost medications and eyeglasses and offering emotional support.

Financial and family assistance

Households impacted by the Eaton, Palisades, Hurst and Kenneth fires are receiving financial aid directly from the Red Cross.

Affected individuals can find more information at redcross.org/gethelp.

Family members traveling to California due to a loved one’s death or hospitalization may access travel assistance through the Family Travel Assistance Team by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

For those searching for missing loved ones, the Red Cross offers support via its Family Reunification services, which can also be accessed through the same number or online at redcross.org/findfamily.

How to help and ongoing needs

The Red Cross is accepting donations to support wildfire relief efforts.

Contributions can be made at redcross.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or by texting CAWILDFIRES to 90999.

The fires have also led to canceled blood drives, increasing the need for blood donations.

All blood types, especially O-negative and platelet donors, are encouraged to schedule donations through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or RedCrossBlood.org.
