According to an article published by Chief Joey Webb Sr. on the International Association of Fire Chiefs website, AM radio has proven to be a crucial resource for emergency communication during disasters.
Chief Webb, who serves as the Fire Chief of the Waynesville Fire Department and is the President of the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs, detailed how AM radio provided lifesaving information during Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
These storms left many residents in the southeastern United States without power or cell service, making AM radio the sole reliable source of updates for many.
“AM radio’s long range and ability to function during power outages, natural disasters, and extreme weather events make it indispensable,” Chief Webb explained.
He highlighted its role in delivering alerts about road closures, dam breaches, and rescue efforts to both the public and first responders.
Chief Webb emphasized the importance of AM radio in the federal Emergency Alert System, noting its ability to disseminate critical information during communication blackouts.
Public officials frequently rely on AM radio to share alerts with the public during crises.
Chief Webb provided an example from North Carolina, where Hurricane Helene left over a million people without power and cell service.
In Asheville, WWNC, a local AM station, continued broadcasting essential updates, guiding residents to essential supplies and offering real-time information on road conditions and assistance programs.
“AM radio stations become proxy dispatch services during disasters, offering a reliable means of communication when all else fails,” he stated.
Despite its importance, Chief Webb expressed concern over the potential removal of AM radio from new vehicle models by some manufacturers.
He called this a “dangerous decision” and advocated for maintaining AM radio as a standard feature.
To address this issue, Chief Webb voiced support for the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at preserving AM radio in all vehicles.
He joined seven former FEMA administrators and over 125 groups in backing this legislation, emphasizing its significance for public safety.
Chief Webb concluded his article by urging lawmakers to support the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, highlighting its role in protecting communities during emergencies.
“During our darkest moments, AM radio connects our communities when other means of communication fail,” he wrote, underscoring the importance of ensuring its continued availability.
