Albemarle County Fire Chief Dan Eggleston has revealed that he will be retiring in October 2025 after leading Albemarle County Fire Rescue in Virginia for 23 years.
Over his 40-year career, Eggleston oversaw the construction of four new fire stations, hired more than 200 career firefighters and secured more than $10 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency grants for staff and equipment.
He has also testified before Congress on critical fire service issues and developed international partnerships with fire service organizations.
Albemarle County will begin the recruitment process for the next Chief in the coming weeks before Eggleston officially retires.
Eggleston shared in a statement: “My time with Albemarle County Fire Rescue has been the most rewarding chapter of my career.
“The progress we have made together has been possible because of the dedication of our volunteers and staff. I am proud of the system we’ve built and confident it will continue to thrive.”
Eggleston was named the 2015 Career Fire Chief of the Year by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and also served as President and Chairman of the Association’s board.
Albemarle County Executive Jeff Richardson said in his own statement: “Chief Eggleston has been a transformational leader for Albemarle County.
“His ability to strengthen Albemarle’s Fire Rescue system through partnerships and collaboration with volunteer companies, while also elevating the voice of the fire service on the national and international stage, is remarkable.
“He has built a modern, unified department that will continue to benefit our community long after his retirement.”
