A new AI-powered wildfire detection system is currently undergoing trials in Southern California, according to a report by SensoRyAI.

The system, developed by SensoRyAI in partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), uses a wireless mesh sensor network combined with artificial intelligence to detect wildfires in their early stages.

This new technology aims to reduce response times, enabling fire crews to deploy resources faster and make better decisions during emergency situations.

With nearly two million people under its protection, OCFA is responsible for 78 fire stations across Orange County.

Brian Fennessy, Fire Chief of OCFA, emphasized the importance of this new technology, saying: “Every single second counts when we respond to a wildfire.

“We are committed to evaluating innovative technologies that have the potential to assist in cutting down detection and response times.”

The trial aims to assess whether this new system can provide faster notifications and ultimately reduce the destruction caused by wildfires in California, where wildfires have been growing in both frequency and severity.

Early detection’s potential economic and environmental impact

Beyond saving lives, early wildfire detection can help mitigate significant economic and environmental damage.

A recent report by the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation estimated that a 15-minute reduction in response times could result in $3.5 to $8.2 billion in economic benefits annually.

Additionally, fiscal savings for the state could range from $150 to $350 million each year.

In terms of environmental impact, reducing wildfires could help prevent the release of greenhouse gases.

Research from UCLA found that the 2020 California wildfires released twice the amount of emissions the state had cut over the previous 16 years.

By detecting wildfires early, SensoRyAI’s system could contribute to preserving the state’s environmental progress.

SensoRyAI, led by founder Ryan Honary, aims to enhance the ability of communities and first responders to deal with environmental hazards.

Honary developed the system after witnessing the devastation of the 2018 Camp Fire.

The company also credits support from partners like the Irvine Ranch Conservancy for making the trial possible.
