Aerogels to see increased use in industrial fire protection

IDTechEx has reported that aerogels used in fire protection and thermal insulation are expected to see their energy and industrial market share more than double over the next decade.

The findings are included in the IDTechEx report “Aerogels 2025-2035: Technology, Market, Forecasts”, which estimates the market will grow from US$348 million in 2025, up from US$224 million in 2021.

The report states that aerogels are being used across a range of applications including fire protection for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, oil and gas infrastructure, construction, and industrial machinery.

Aerogel performance and form factor diversity

IDTechEx explained that aerogels are lightweight materials with low thermal conductivity and high porosity, typically in the range of 90–95 percent air.

It reported that silica and silica-composite aerogels make up most of the market, with new contributions from companies developing organic alternatives.

The research organization found that over 130 products are currently on the market or under development in the form of blankets, foams, sheets, and particles.

IDTechEx stated that the sheet or blanket format is most common in energy and industrial use, with products supplied by companies such as Aspen Aerogels, Armacell, Nano Tech, and LG Chem.

Dust issues and manufacturing improvements

According to IDTechEx, silica-composite aerogels present challenges due to the release of dust during handling and application.

It noted that this can affect product durability and performance over time.

The organization said that improvements in production methods are being explored to address this limitation.

China leads in production and price influence

IDTechEx reported that while aerogels remain more expensive than many conventional insulation materials, recent changes in supply may affect pricing.

It stated that China now accounts for roughly 97 percent of the global production capacity, with new expansions planned.

The group added that expanded production may contribute to more competitive costs across markets.

Aerogels market to double in fire protection and thermal applications: Summary

IDTechEx reported that the aerogels market for energy and industrial applications is projected to more than double in the next decade.

The forecasted growth is from US$224 million in 2021 to US$348 million in 2025.

Aerogels are used in fire protection for EV batteries, oil and gas, and construction.

The materials are highly porous and lightweight, with thermal and acoustic insulation properties.

Most aerogels are silica-based, but organic variants are being developed.

Over 130 products have been benchmarked by IDTechEx across various forms.

Dust generation during handling is a challenge for silica-based aerogels.

Manufacturers are focusing on refining processes to reduce dust.

China currently produces 97 percent of the global aerogel supply.

Future production expansions may help lower market prices.

Aerogels remain more costly than other insulation materials.

Wider availability may increase adoption in energy and industrial sectors.

The IDTechEx report provides ten-year forecasts and product benchmarks.

Applications also include building insulation, energy storage, and electronics.
