The 2024 District Earthquake Drill is scheduled to take place in Bogotá, as reported by the Special Administrative Unit Official Firefighters Corps Bogotá.
This exercise is organized to prepare residents, private companies, public entities, and other social organizations for potential seismic events.
The drill is a continuation of the provisions outlined in District Agreement 341 of 2008, which mandates the participation of all Bogotá inhabitants in preparing for large-scale emergencies.
The main drill will occur on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., and will involve private companies, public entities, educational institutions, and community members.
According to event organizers, it is an opportunity for all sectors to improve their preparedness and disaster response capabilities.
In addition to the main event on October 2, operational exercises will take place from October 7 to 11, involving key entities responsible for Bogotá’s emergency response strategy.
These entities will test their capabilities through specific drills, ensuring smooth coordination in case of a real disaster.
The operational drills include a transformer explosion simulation at the El Circo Substation, an air crash drill at El Dorado Airport, and an urban search and rescue exercise led by Bogotá’s official firefighters.
These activities aim to strengthen response services and ensure that city personnel are well-prepared to manage various emergencies.
A separate simulation will also be conducted in October for the members of the District Council for Risk Management and Climate Change, as well as Local Councils.
This exercise is designed to improve decision-making skills in complex emergencies, especially those involving seismic risk.
The Instituto Distrital de Gestión de Riesgos y Cambio Climático (IDIGER) will lead this activity.
The goal is to raise awareness and train decision-makers in handling emergencies and disasters effectively.
It is a critical opportunity for these leaders to assess their preparedness and enhance their crisis management strategies.
Residents of Bogotá can register and participate in the drill online.
All participants must register each year and complete their participation reports through the designated website.
The IDIGER has also prepared a variety of virtual meetings and training sessions for those interested in learning more about the drill.
Virtual resources, including infographics, emergency kits, and other materials, are available for download.
The IDIGER will also monitor the city-wide drill through the Emergency Operations Center.
The entity encourages organizations to plan their exercises thoroughly, emphasizing the importance of minimizing real risks during the drill.
